In this talk, we’ll examine the subgenre of American Gothic art through the lens of the Southwest's desert landscapes. By comparing themes prevalent in European Romanticism and Gothic literature, such as the supernatural, decay, and psychological horror, with the tensions in American Gothic art regarding isolation in a vast, rural American landscape, we will explore how the desert is, in its own right, a Gothic landscape full of ghosts.
